October Surprise Podcast Series

Episode #11 of October Surprise features Brian Skibo, a brain cancer patient from Hermitage whose life-saving healthcare is covered by Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act). This is Skibo’s reaction to House Republicans, including Rep. Mike Kelly, holding a Rose Garden ceremony/photo-op on May 4, 2017, to celebrate their vote to repeal Obamacare: “My first reaction was that they were celebrating that I could die,” Skibo says. “I know that’s pretty dark, but that’s how I first took it. People that make $175,000 year … but since I wouldn’t be able to afford healthcare, they were celebrating that I can die. At that point I was receiving my chemo, and I would have to stop. Who knows what would happen to me? Mike Kelly would take away the experience of my oncologist coming in and telling me that the cancer’s gone.” October Surprise is a podcast created for citizens by citizens in PA’s new 16th Congressional District. Conversations educate listeners in Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Lawrence, and Butler Counties on key issues leading up to Election Day 2018.
